Since 2018, the 111-member Nyatike Mirema Community Forest Association has regenerated half of the 810-hectare Mirema Forest in Migori County, planting at least 300,000 trees with a 70% survival rate using low-cost farmer-managed natural regeneration. The association deliberately built income opportunities for people with disabilities and widows into its tree-nursery work, so members who once relied on begging now earn a living selling seedlings. The Kenya Forest Service has since held up Mirema as a model for exporting community-led restoration to other degraded forests, with full recovery of the site targeted by 2027.
