Mongolia's Toilet-Taboo Breakers Swap Ger-District Pit Latrines for Dry Toilets

Local Solutions, led by Oyungerel Tsedevdamba, runs the 'Let's Change Our Toilets' campaign, launched in 2017 to break the silence around sanitation in Mongolia. Roughly two in three people in Ulaanbaatar's ger districts still use outdoor pit latrines that can contaminate groundwater, so the group promotes dry toilets, trains local toilet-maker small businesses and teaches households to manage the waste as compost. Its nationwide workshop tour ended with 99.9% of participants voting to use dry toilets. The Toilet Education Center, funded by about US$61,000 from some 212 donors and located about 20 minutes from central Ulaanbaatar, opened on 19 November 2025; the group says it has installed 1,150 dry toilets in eight years and aims to reach 6,000 households by 2030. Donations are routed through the fiscal sponsor Hesperian Health Guides.
