Protecting Costa Rica's Children's Eternal Rainforest
by Monteverde Conservation League (Asociación Conservacionista de Monteverde) · HQ 🇨🇷 Costa Rica
The Monteverde Conservation League has grown the Children's Eternal Rainforest into a 22,600-hectare stretch of protected premontane and cloud forest in Costa Rica's Tilarán mountains, purchased through decades of fundraising by children in more than 40 countries. Since 1986 the League has run reforestation, watershed protection and environmental education programs across the reserve, which shelters over 400 bird species, 100 mammals and roughly 1,200 amphibian and reptile species. The League has planted more than 1.6 million trees to reconnect fragmented cloud forest habitat and buffer Monteverde's famous fog-dependent ecosystem from encroaching deforestation.
