more trees: Community Forestry Across Japan's Mountains

Founded in 2007 by Ryuichi Sakamoto and collaborators, starting in Yusuhara Town, Kochi Prefecture, more trees works with local governments and residents to thin, replant, and sustainably manage Japan's underused timber plantations and native broadleaf forests. The organization now runs region-based forest stewardship projects at 22 sites across Japan plus 2 overseas locations, including mangrove and orangutan-habitat restoration in Indonesia, and connects urban donors and companies to specific forests through wood products and forest-credit programs. After Sakamoto's death in 2023, the Trees for Sakamoto fundraising platform was launched in his memory to continue funding new planting.
