Formed to support Namibia's post-independence communal conservancy legislation (first conservancies registered in 1998), NACSO coordinates technical and institutional support for the country's community-based natural resource management movement, under which residents hold collective rights over wildlife and tourism revenue on their communal land. As of recent reporting, 86 communal conservancies have been gazetted, covering roughly 20% of Namibia's land area and benefiting more than 244,000 residents.
