NAMCOB, based in Luderitz, protects seabirds along Namibia's coast, focusing on the most threatened of 22 overexploited or threatened species, among them Cape gannets and bank cormorants whose breeding numbers fell sharply in the latest census of the Namibian Islands' Marine Protected Area. On 23 October 2024 it installed its first 25 artificial nest boxes for African penguins on Possession Island, where guano scraping and erosion have removed natural burrow sites. It also rehabilitates oiled and injured birds: its first rehabilitation patient, penguin AP001, was released after 412 days in care, and its website counts 51 seabirds admitted for care so far in 2026.
