Established by a 1996 treaty between Austria, Vienna and Lower Austria, Nationalpark Donau-Auen protects more than 9,600 hectares of near-natural floodplain forest and wetlands along the Danube. For over 25 years the park has run river renaturation projects that reconnect cut-off side-arms, dismantle hardened banks and restore natural flow dynamics, boosting numbers of juvenile fish and safeguarding species like the European pond turtle and great capricorn beetle. In 2024 alone, 518 volunteers logged over 2,000 hours across 19 conservation work deployments inside the park.
