Founded in Cotonou in 1995, Nature Tropicale ONG became the first Benin-based NGO admitted to IUCN membership in 2004 and has led the country's marine conservation work ever since. Its eco-guards patrol nesting beaches to protect olive ridley and leatherback sea turtles, releasing more than 20,000 hatchlings and rescuing over 450 adult turtles caught in fishing gear each year. The organization helped establish Benin's first two marine protected areas, Donaten and Togbin-Bouche du Roy, by January 2022, and works with more than 20 women's groups along the coast on environmental education and cleanup campaigns.
