Founded in Sydney in 2004 by Ronni Kahn after she saw event caterers throwing out untouched food, OzHarvest now runs a fleet of refrigerated vans that collect surplus food from supermarkets, farms, restaurants and hotels across Australia and deliver it free to charities and community groups the same day. Because rotting food waste generates methane, rescuing it also cuts landfill emissions, and OzHarvest pairs its food runs with cooking classes and a nationwide food-waste education campaign. The charity has expanded into New Zealand and South Africa under related OzHarvest-model organizations.
