Parkrun: The Free Saturday 5K That Went Global

parkrun events are free, timed, non-competitive 5K walks/runs (plus separate junior 2Ks) organized entirely by volunteers in local parks and green spaces, with no entry fee and no pressure to run the whole way. The concept has spread from its 2004 London launch to roughly 2,200 weekly events across more than 20 countries, drawing walkers, joggers, wheelchair users and buggy-pushers of every ability alongside regular runners. In 2025 alone, parkrunners recorded 18.2 million 5K finishes, a 14.4% jump on the year before, while the worldwide community of registered participants approached 11 million people. Research cited by parkrun links regular participation to improved physical activity, mental wellbeing and reduced social isolation, particularly among people who were previously inactive.
