Prinzessinnengarten Kollektiv: Berlin's Vacant-Lot Garden

In July 2009, two friends with almost no gardening experience took over a 6,000 m² derelict lot in Kreuzberg, Berlin, clearing decades of debris to grow vegetables and herbs in movable containers so the garden could relocate if the land were reclaimed by the city. After losing that site, the collective re-founded itself in 2020 on the grounds of the former Neuer St. Jacobi Cemetery in Neukölln, where it now runs communal garden work days, ecological workshops and school and kindergarten programs on organic growing and urban nature. Everything is self-organized and self-financed, run as an open neighborhood space rather than a conventional business or charity.
