Since 1997, Re-Cycle has collected donated and abandoned bicycles across the UK that would otherwise be scrapped, refurbishing them or salvaging every reusable part before shipping them to partner organizations in seven African countries including Ghana, Zambia, The Gambia and Sierra Leone. In 2024 alone the charity saved 18,260 bikes from landfill and shipped 12,400 of them to Africa, bringing its total since founding to more than 168,000 bicycles delivered in 372 shipping containers. Local partners also train mechanics to keep the bikes running, turning waste diversion in Britain into affordable, zero-emission transport for students, health workers and traders in rural Africa.
