Established in 2017 after back-to-back mass coral bleaching events and a major cyclone damaged two-thirds of the Great Barrier Reef, this organisation (formerly Reef Restoration Foundation, now Resilient Reefs Foundation) built Australia's first offshore coral nursery at Fitzroy Island near Cairns. Volunteer dive teams, many working in reef tourism, tend more than 20 coral trees holding over 2,000 growing coral fragments, which mature in 6-12 months before cuttings are transplanted back onto damaged reef. More than 300 coral trees' worth of cuttings have already been out-planted, working toward a goal of one million corals restored by 2026.
