The Sahara Forest Project's Aqaba Launch Station, inaugurated in 2017 with Norwegian and EU funding, demonstrates how saltwater-cooled greenhouses, solar power and revegetation can turn arid coastal desert into productive farmland. The three-hectare site pumps seawater from the Red Sea to cool and humidify greenhouse air and irrigate crops, without depleting freshwater aquifers. By 2022 the demonstration greenhouses had produced 220 tonnes of vegetables, and the project has also trained female Jordanian engineers to operate the technology.
