The Salvadoran Red Cross activated its Early Action Protocol in May 2026 after the national environmental observatory forecast below-normal rain from May to July linked to El Niño. The three-month, CHF 544,465 operation focuses on Morazán and La Unión and aims to reach up to 10,000 people (about 2,000 families). It includes 600 cash transfers for food, fuel and transport, plus treated drinking water for 600 families at 15 litres per person per day for 25 days. Workshops cover water use, hygiene, heat-stroke prevention and drought-adapted farming practices.
