Save Lamu is a coalition of community-based organisations in Lamu County that went to Kenya's National Environment Tribunal, with Katiba Institute, against the 1,050 MW Lamu coal plant planned at Manda Bay. In 2019 the tribunal revoked the plant's environmental licence. On 16 October 2025 the Environment and Land Court in Malindi dismissed the developer's appeal, finding the impact assessment inadequate on issues including ash disposal, air pollution and climate change, and effectively halting the project unless a new assessment is done. Residents celebrated in Lamu Old Town two days later.
