Established in 1975, SECS is Sudan's pioneering national environmental organization, built on a network of more than 113 volunteer branches across the country. Even through Sudan's civil conflict, SECS has continued fieldwork: in late 2025 it ran environmental awareness campaigns around the Dinder Reserve and trained surveyors around the Jabal Al-Dair Reserve in North Darfur, and in mid-2026 it partnered with UNEP to survey poverty and climate indicators across 11 villages in Al-Rahad and Gedaref state. Its long-running programs span environmental education, water and sanitation, climate-change adaptation and community-based natural resource management, and it represents Sudanese civil society at UN climate negotiations including COP29.
