Young Somali Volunteers Racing to Save Trees and the Somali Wild Ass

Founded in 2017 by young Somali environmental activists and based in Garowe, Puntland, Somalia Earth Volunteers trains grassroots activists, runs reforestation drives — including joining Puntland's annual Tree Planting Week — and has carried out more than 340 environmental campaigns tackling deforestation, land degradation and climate adaptation. Its field researchers also track the critically endangered Somali wild ass, documenting a 20 percent population decline between 2021 and 2023 due to drought and habitat loss, and use the data to push for protected reserves and anti-poaching enforcement.
