Founded in Kabul in 2007, Skateistan combines skateboarding with creative education to reach children who are often excluded from formal schooling, especially girls. The organization now runs Skate Schools in Afghanistan, Cambodia, and South Africa alongside dozens of partner projects on five continents. More than 6,000 children and youth attend Skateistan programs every week, and 54% of participants are girls. In Afghanistan alone, over 2,700 students remain active in its programs, including 175 children with disabilities.
