Snowchange Cooperative, founded in Finland in 2000, works with local and Indigenous Sámi communities to restore boreal peatlands, mires and forests destroyed by decades of peat extraction and drainage. Through its Landscape Rewilding Programme it now owns roughly 10,000 hectares of recovering land and holds stewardship agreements extending its influence across more than 65,000 hectares. Its flagship Linnunsuo wetland, a former peat-mining wasteland, now hosts around 200 recorded bird species, up from only a couple before restoration began. In 2023 the cooperative's co-founder Tero Mustonen won the Goldman Environmental Prize for this community-led rewilding work.
