Counting and Protecting Chile's Vanishing Humboldt Penguins

Sphenisco, founded in 2008 at Landau Zoo, supports the protection of Humboldt penguin breeding colonies and their surrounding waters along the coasts of Chile and Peru, where the species has declined by roughly two-thirds. It backs a rescue and rehabilitation centre for injured penguins and other marine animals in Coquimbo, Chile, run jointly with Conservación Humboldt and the Universidad Católica del Norte, and co-funds colony censuses with partner group ACOREMA. It also built the Alianza Humboldt, a network of more than 70 regional and national organisations formed in 2019 to coordinate protection of the species, and trains fishermen and schoolchildren on habitat protection.
