SWaCH grew out of the Pune waste pickers' union KKPKP and is a self-governing cooperative of waste pickers and other urban poor, run in partnership with the Pune Municipal Corporation. Its official impact page reports 3,900+ waste pickers integrated in the cooperative as of 31 December 2024, covering about 10,00,000 of Pune's roughly 14,00,000 properties with 200 to 250 properties per picker. Members earn user fees from households plus income from the recyclables they sell, instead of scavenging from bins and dumps. The cooperative also runs paid collection drives for electronics, furniture and temple offerings.
