Te Kōhanga Reo began at Pukeatua, Wainuiomata, in April 1982, as a whānau-led response to the rapid decline of te reo Māori, and the National Trust was established the following year to support kōhanga around the country. Within a year, 112 kōhanga reo had opened; by 1993 there were 819 kōhanga reo with over 14,000 children enrolled, making up close to half of all Māori early childhood enrolments at the time. More than 50,000 children have now attended a Kōhanga Reo, immersing tamariki from birth to age six in Māori language, tikanga and values alongside their whānau.
