Founded in 1992 by Hayrettin Karaca and Nihat Gökyiğit, TEMA campaigns against soil erosion, which affects an estimated 39% of Turkey's agricultural land, through reforestation, legal advocacy, and nature education delivered through 81 regional branches covering every Turkish province. Its long-running Oak Project has sown hundreds of millions of acorns to rebuild erosion-resistant oak forests, while its broader planting programs and hundreds of completed rural development projects help protect watersheds and rural livelihoods. TEMA has also filed or intervened in hundreds of environmental lawsuits and reached millions of schoolchildren with nature education.
