Mapping and Defending Cyprus's Vanishing Wetlands

Terra Cypria, a charitable foundation established in 1992, runs the Cyprus Environmental Studies Centre and led the first complete Inventory of Cyprus Wetlands, a two-year rapid-assessment survey that identified and mapped 373 wetlands nationwide. It is Cyprus's contact point for restoring the Akrotiri wetland system's Lady's Mile, working with the UK Sovereign Base Area authorities to curb the uncontrolled traffic and dumping degrading the country's most important bird habitat. In 2026 Terra Cypria launched Phragmographysis, a new project with WWF Netherlands and Frederick Research Centre to document river barriers in Cyprus as part of the Europe-wide Open Rivers Programme, directly addressing the water scarcity and river fragmentation the island faces as reservoirs fall to historic lows.
