TIST – The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program

TIST began in 1999 with about 40 subsistence farmer groups in central Tanzania and has grown into a grassroots network spanning Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and India. Farmers organize into small self-governed groups that plant and monitor trees on their own land, receiving quarterly carbon pre-payments plus a majority share of eventual carbon credit sales. The network now includes more than 239,000 farmers who have planted and verified over 26 million living trees, sequestering more than 6 million tonnes of CO2.
