Since 1993, Trees for Cities has worked with councils, schools and communities to green the streets, parks and estates that need canopy cover the most, tackling the UK's uneven distribution of urban trees. Its Edible Playgrounds programme turns bare tarmac schoolyards into outdoor growing spaces where children plant, harvest and eat their own food, with independent research finding most participating schools saw children's attitudes to healthy eating improve. The charity has now planted 2 million urban trees since its founding and built 216 Edible Playgrounds in schools across the UK.
