Sea turtles have been legally protected on Aruba since 1987, field monitoring began in 1994, and the Turtugaruba Foundation was formally established in 2003 as a WIDECAST-affiliated group. Its volunteers monitor nests on the island's beaches, rescue turtles in danger through a 24/7 hotline, run beach cleanups and school education, and support research. The foundation reports protecting about 6,700 hatchlings a year on average, across the four species that nest on Aruba, with around 25 volunteers in the field team and more than a hundred having taken part over two decades.
