On Heimaey in Iceland's Westman Islands, fledgling Atlantic puffins (pufflings) are drawn to town lights instead of the sea. During the 2025 season, from 29 July to 29 September, volunteers and residents rescued and released more than 7,000 pufflings. The SEA LIFE Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary, which has supported the Puffling Patrol since 2019, took 276 oiled, injured or underweight birds into its hospital, where they stayed an average of 11 days. Four birds became permanent residents.
