Wild Forests & Fauna: Regreening Palorinya Refugee Settlement

Palorinya, Uganda's second-largest refugee settlement, lost an estimated 14.7 million trees to firewood and charcoal cutting between 2015 and 2018 as it grew to host more than 100,000 South Sudanese refugees. Since 2018, Wild Forests & Fauna (WildFF) has trained refugees as nursery managers and environmental educators, planting native fruit and fuelwood saplings and constructing fuel-efficient cookstoves to cut wood demand. Between 2018 and 2021 the project planted roughly 500,000 saplings (reaching a 76% survival rate by 2019) and built 12,820 fuel-efficient cookstoves, reaching an estimated 42% of the settlement's population.
