Wildlife Estonia (Eesti Loodushoiu Keskus), a nonprofit founded in 2000, works on river and freshwater-species protection across Estonia, from lampreys to eels. Through the EU-funded LIFE Baltic Sturgeon project (2022-2027), it rears and releases young Atlantic sturgeon sourced from German broodstock into the Narva and Pärnu rivers, aiming for roughly 100,000 young sturgeon released per year toward a self-sustaining wild population. The project also tags migrating silver eels to track their journey to spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea, with tagged eels recorded traveling over 1,300 km to Denmark in as little as 68 days.
