Founded in 1993 and based in Pune, the Watershed Organisation Trust works with rural communities across nine drought-prone Indian states to rebuild degraded watersheds through participatory soil and water conservation structures such as check-dams, contour trenches and farm ponds. The rehydrated land supports renewed farming, fodder and drinking-water security in villages that previously depended on erratic monsoon rains. WOTR reports having treated over 1.6 million hectares of degraded watershed land across thousands of villages, alongside measured increases in groundwater storage and household income in its project sites.
