A Romanian foundation is buying up clear-cut mountainsides in the Făgăraș Mountains and letting bison, beavers and old-growth forest reclaim them.

Since 1991, Romania's oldest wildlife NGO has GPS-collared dozens of Carpathian brown bears, rescued orphaned cubs, and helped farmers coexist with the EU's largest bear population.

A Saschiz-based foundation works with farmers to keep Transylvania's flower-rich hay meadows mown and grazed the old way, protecting one of Europe's last great semi-natural grasslands.
