Tracking and Protecting the Carpathians' Brown Bears

Milvus Group is a Targu Mures-based nature protection association whose brown bear program in the Eastern Carpathians has fitted 35 bears with GPS-GSM collars and collected genetic samples from more than 150 individuals to study denning, movement and habitat use. The team has rescued 44 orphaned bear cubs and freed 14 bears from poachers' snares, while installing electric fences for local farmers to reduce human-bear conflict around orchards and beehives. Milvus also runs a wildlife rehabilitation centre and contributed telemetry and genetic data to a European-wide brown bear habitat study published in January 2026, underscoring its continuing role in Carpathian bear research.
