AGUAPAN is a farmer-led association of Andean 'potato guardians' who each conserve dozens to hundreds of native potato landraces on their own high-altitude plots across central Peru. Formed in 2014, it grew out of a benefit-sharing arrangement with plant breeders and now channels payments for agrobiodiversity conservation directly to custodian households. Members work with the International Potato Center (CIP) and Peruvian research institutes to DNA-fingerprint landraces, register new varieties, and defend farmers' rights to the genetic diversity their ancestors bred over centuries. Many of its custodian farmers are women who lead seed selection, exchange and safeguarding in their communities.
