Rented Toilets Replace the Bucket in Kumasi's Back Lanes

Clean Team Ghana was founded in 2012 with Unilever UK and WSUP to bring container-based sanitation to low-income homes in Kumasi and Obuasi that have no sewer. Customers pay a monthly fee instead of buying a toilet, and the company handles delivery, installation, collection and maintenance. After a World Bank-funded project subsidised 33,000 biodigester toilets around Kumasi in 2023, it added biodigester toilets and emptying services alongside its container toilets. It employs a team of over 70 Ghanaians and says it plans to expand to Accra.
