DUCT: Healthy Rivers, Healthy People Across KwaZulu-Natal

Established in 2005 by a working group alarmed at the state of Pietermaritzburg and Durban's rivers, the Duzi-uMngeni Conservation Trust champions community-driven river rehabilitation across the uMsunduzi-uMngeni catchment. Its teams monitor water quality on more than 30 rivers, tributaries and streams, clear alien vegetation from riparian zones in Edendale, Sobantu, Baynespruit, Durban and Richards Bay, and run the schools-based Adopt-a-River programme with the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa. With backing from South Africa's Social Employment Fund, UNICEF and Wildlands, DUCT has created 1,000 job opportunities for local people doing environmental work across the province. Its citizen-science miniSASS kits let ordinary residents check their local stream's health with nothing more than a net and a scorecard.
