Established in 1997, the Field Band Foundation runs 46 field bands at 23 sites across 7 of South Africa's 9 provinces, combining brass and percussion music with dance, life-skills training, and HIV/AIDS education for young people aged 7 to 21. Bands are sited in townships and rural areas where after-school and cultural infrastructure is scarce, reaching nearly 6,000 young people, 54% of them girls, roughly 80% of whom had no prior musical training before joining. Beyond performance, the programme builds discipline, teamwork, and self-esteem, and bands have represented South Africa at events including the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening ceremony and the 2018 South African Music Awards.
