FoodForward SA: Rescuing Surplus Food to Feed South Africa's Hungry

FoodForward SA collects quality surplus food from farmers, manufacturers, and retailers such as Woolworths before it reaches landfill and redistributes it through a national network of registered beneficiary organisations. In the 2023/24 financial year the organisation recovered 21,760 tonnes of food, the equivalent of 87 million meals, reaching 920,000 people including orphans and vulnerable children, women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and people living with HIV/AIDS. The model relies on warehouse and virtual food banking, mother-and-child nutrition programmes, school breakfast schemes, and disaster relief food distribution across the country.
