Grootbos Foundation: Training Green Futures in the World's Richest Small Floral Kingdom

Established in 2003 by the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, the Grootbos Foundation leads the Walker Bay Fynbos Conservancy, a coalition of roughly 50 landowners now managing more than 23,000 hectares of Cape Floral Kingdom habitat, including 12,500 hectares under formal protection. The Conservancy safeguards over 1,500 recorded plant species alongside leopard, Cape clawless otter and other threatened wildlife. Through its Green Futures College, the Foundation has trained more than 118 unemployed young adults in indigenous horticulture, hospitality and guiding since inception, with over 90% finding employment afterward, while a parallel course trains 12 unemployed women annually in eco-tourism and hospitality. Its Alien Vegetation Management programme currently employs 61 people from surrounding communities to clear invasive species and restore native fynbos.
