Since becoming a national movement in 1984, the MST has organized more than 2,500 peaceful occupations of idle large estates to pressure the Brazilian state to redistribute land under its constitutional agrarian-reform mandate. An estimated 370,000 families now own and farm roughly 7.5 million hectares won through this process, while some 150,000 more families remain organized in around 900 encampments awaiting government titling. Settled families run agroecological cooperatives, schools and Brazil's largest organic rice and organic food production network.
