MusicWorks: Music Therapy as a Lifeline for Cape Flats Children

Started in September 2002 as the Music Therapy Community Clinic in Heideveld with two part-time volunteer therapists, MusicWorks is now a registered non-profit using music therapy, rather than pure instrumental teaching, to help vulnerable children process trauma and rebuild a sense of safety and self-worth. Its Music for Life after-school programme runs marimba bands, choirs, drumming circles and gumboot dance groups, while its Music Therapy and Creative Resilience programmes offer individual and group sessions grounded in a recognised, regulated therapeutic discipline. The organisation currently works across seven active sites in Cape Town's marginalised neighbourhoods, including Heideveld, Zonnebloem/District Six, Delft, Maitland and Stellenbosch, reaching approximately 1,000 children annually. MusicWorks won the Community Chest Impumelelo Social Innovator in Arts and Culture award in 2019 for its Music for Life programme.
