Founded in 1995, ProDelphinus works with artisanal fishing communities along Peru's Pacific coast to reduce bycatch of critically endangered sea turtles, dolphins and seabirds in gillnets and longlines. Since 2001 the group has run one of the longest continuous sea turtle bycatch monitoring programs in the Eastern Pacific, satellite-tracking loggerheads, leatherbacks and hawksbills while training fishers in safe handling and release. In 2025, founder Joanna Alfaro-Shigueto won a Whitley Award to scale up the approach beyond the village of San Jose, building on a program that had already trained over 1,800 fishers.
