Created in 1980 and co-managed with Brazil's Chico Mendes Institute since 1988, Projeto TAMAR protects nesting beaches, tags and researches sea turtles, and runs visitor centers along roughly 1,100 km of coastline across nine Brazilian states. The project employs local coastal residents — many of them former turtle hunters — as researchers and guides, turning a livelihood that once threatened turtles into one that protects them. Its long-running monitoring program spans five threatened species: the hawksbill, leatherback, loggerhead, green and olive ridley turtle.
