Titling Indigenous Amazon Territories in Peru

Rainforest Foundation US works with AIDESEP, Peru's national Indigenous federation, and Rainforest Trust to help Native communities in the Peruvian Amazon secure formal land titles, cutting through a bureaucratic process that can otherwise take a decade or more. Using community-led mapping, satellite monitoring and real-time deforestation alerts, the partnership helped 37 Indigenous communities in Loreto win land titles between June 2023 and May 2024, a record pace for Peru. A new phase launched in 2025 is supporting 41 Urarina communities in the Chambira-Marañón basin to title roughly 550,000 acres of rainforest. Research cited by the partners links formal titling to a 66% reduction in deforestation compared with untitled Indigenous territory.
