Soil for Life runs hands-on 'Grow to Live' training in low-income Cape Town neighborhoods, teaching organic soil preparation, composting, seed-saving and natural pest control alongside a starter pack of compost, mulch and seedlings, followed by up to 21 months of mentorship. The organization also trains gardeners to become community trainers themselves, and has expanded into school food gardens that supply produce to feeding schemes for thousands of learners. Since 2002 it has helped more than 9,200 people establish home and community food gardens, and between 2021 and 2025 alone it set up gardens at 40 schools reaching over 14,000 children.
