The catastrophic 2020 fires burned roughly 26% of the Pantanal biome, the world's largest tropical wetland, destroying vegetation around water sources communities depend on. Instituto SOS Pantanal's Raízes do Pantanal program buys native seedlings grown by Indigenous producers, starting in the Cachoeirinha Indigenous Land in Miranda, Mato Grosso do Sul, and uses them to replant burned riverbanks and springs. The program pairs ecological restoration with income for local growers, and runs alongside SOS Pantanal's Brigadas Pantaneiras community firefighting brigades, which help stop the next fire from undoing the recovery.
