Ubuntu Football Academy: Football and Education for Cape Town's Township Youth

Ubuntu Football Academy recruits promising young footballers from Khayelitsha, Philippi, and Mitchells Plain and enrols them in a fully resourced school that pairs elite coaching with rigorous academics through matric. Between 2017 and 2023, 92.5% of Ubuntu graduates passed matric versus 82.9% nationally, and 62.9% qualified for university versus 40.9% nationally, while graduate youth unemployment sits at just 14% against a national rate of 59.6%. Beyond the classroom, 25 alumni have signed professional football contracts and 22 have won academic scholarships in the United States. Around 60 learners from grades 7-12 currently attend the school, part of a broader roster of about 80 players under long-term development, and in 2024 the academy enrolled its first girls.
